Astou’s Group – Retail (Senegal)

The ‘banc villageois’ which houses this group was created on December 12, 2011. It is composed of 28 women who live in the same village. Their main work includes small-scale commerce and selling fish.

Ms. Astou, the featured borrower of the group, is 29 years old. She is married and the mother of a girl. Ms. Astou has a business selling shoes and handbags with over ten years of good experience. In the photo, she is the one standing at the far right dressed in a multi-colored Wax cloth outfit, and her left hand is raised.

She purchases her goods in the big cities to resell them in her town. Her loan will serve to supply her with shoes and handbags so as to make more income. With her profits, she ensures that her daughter’s schooling costs are covered, and she helps out her husband in meeting family expenses.
